Singin' In The Rain

Hello readers! I am back, this time wetter than usual because I just had a splashing good time at the Gala Night of London's Award Winning Hit Musical: Singin' In The Rain!

I want to say a big thank you to Shaun and BASE Entertainment Asia for extending the invitation as I really enjoyed myself throughout the 2 hour 40 minute (20 minutes interval) musical. I managed to catch a glimpse of some celebrities such as Desmond Tan, Eden Ang and Irene Ang on the red carpet as well (just to name a few). The feeling is just so surreal.

A selfie before the musical! Alright, let's not digress and talk a bit more about the musical.

Adapted from the 1952 movie of the same name, the plot adheres to the original. It is set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era and focuses on the lead actor Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's onscreen leading lady Lina Lamont, whose "melodic and angel like" vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate in talking films.
Don can barely tolerate Lina Lamont, who is convinced that their screen romance is real. After the first talking pictureThe Jazz Singer, proves to be a smash hit, the head of the studio, R. F. Simpson, decides he has no choice but to convert the new Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a talkie. The production is beset with difficulties, by far the worst being Lina's comically grating voice. After a disastrous test screening, Don's best friend, Cosmo Brown, comes up with the idea to overdub Lina's voice and they convince Simpson to turn The Dueling Cavalier into The Dancing Cavalier, a musical comedy film. Meanwhile, Don falls in love with an aspiring actress, Kathy Selden, who is providing the voice for Lina. When Lina finds out, she is furious and does everything possible to sabotage the romance. She maliciously demands that Kathy continue to provide her voice in all future films, but remain uncredited. An irate, but desperate Simpson is forced to agree; Kathy has no choice because she is under contract.

The premiere is a tremendous success. When the audience clamors for Lina to sing live, Don and Cosmo improvise and get Lina to lip-synch while Kathy sings into a second microphone while hidden behind the curtain. Unbeknownst to Lina, as she starts "singing", Don, Cosmo and Simpson gleefully raise the curtain behind her, revealing the deception. Kathy becomes a star, and Lina is finished.

The stage at the Mastercard Theatre looks impressive!

If you are prepared to get drenched, get yourself a ticket at the first four rows. You will be issued with a poncho and you will get to experience how it is to be "sitting in the rain". The highlight of the musical is definitely the rainfall and 12,000 litres of water is used in each performance to create this amazing and spectacular effect.
Your ticket price is really worth every single cent that you are paying for as a very complicated system with pumps, nozzles, sand filters, UV filters as well as chemically treated water to ensure the best effect is being presented to the audience. Not to worry about any water wastage as the water used will be recycled. The floor is made of a special composite material which the cast travels with to different countries that they perform in.

I am a fan of musicals and my take on "Singin' In The Rain" is that it is a must watch and definitely a musical not to be missed! The story line is beautiful and simply enchanting. I love the chemistry between the lead actor Duane Alexander (playing Don Lockwood) and Bethany Dickson (playing Kathy Selden), kudos to Taryn-Lee Hudson (playing Lina Lamont) for her portrayal of such a feisty and funny character. My favorite songs of the night are the classic hits like "Good Morning, Make ‘em Laugh and, you guessed it, Singin’ in the Rain". This is the first time the musical is brought into Singapore and you definitely got to catch it!
